Sock Knitting Challenge - Pair Number 5

22. June 2015 12:19 by Jobo | 3 Comments

I'm so behind... my life has been pretty hectic!  I started back to work at my full time job after a year of maternity leave, and I'm just starting to get caught back up on everything.  The one constant - if I don't get to be creative, I go a little stir crazy!  So now I'm going to try and catch you all up on the finished projects from the last few months, and hopefully I'll be able to keep a handle on what's going on a little better now that I spend part of my day on an actual computer!

Back in March, I finished a lovely little pair of purple socks for a friend!  These ended up in my Snobby-Spinners-Swap package for Caryn!  This group is full of wonderful, supportive, fun spinners/weavers/knitters who love working with indy dyers and fancy wools and yarns.  They make fantastic stuff, and I'm so lucky to be a part of their group.  Caryn and I drew each others' names and I decided to knit her socks, since that's what I'm good at.

The pattern is "Johnson's Wave" by Claire Ellen... one of my favorite sock designers... and is available as a free pattern over on Rav.  I chose workhorse yarn... Knitpicks Stroll in Sprinkle Heather.  Together the two made a nice, machine washable, comfortable pair of socks :)

Sock Knitting Challenge - Pair 3!

9. March 2015 20:53 by Jobo | 8 Comments

I'm a little bit behind in posting my February socks for my self imposed Sock Knitting Challenge (to knit at least 12 pairs of socks in 2015!).

I could blame it on the kiddos... but that's a little lame, right?  Sleep is for the weak... right?  zzzzzz.  There was a time in my life where I could polish off an entire pair of socks in a week.  This time, I was doing well to do the pair in the 28 day month.  I honestly just barely squeaked it.

February's Addicted to Sock Knitting KAL pattern was Heatherly Walker's "Love's Wings", which is another toe up lace/cable mashup.  I liked this pattern especially because of the variety of techniques.  I always find that this kind of pattern with the challenge of stitches and combinations keeps my attention better than a plain style.  I'm weird like that - I can knit interesting lace or complicated cables in half the time it takes to knit a plain ribbed sock.  Ribbing makes me want to poke my eyes out... but complicated lace where you have to follow every row of a pattern?  yes please!  It's a sickness...

The yarn I chose is KnitPicks Hawthorne... in a nice blue variegated.  I seem to have thrown out the ball band.  Woops!  I can`t remember what the colorway is and a lot of the blue and purple ones are similar.  I hadn`t used this yarn before, and found it to be ok to work with, though I found it to be a little splittier than Stroll.  I will definitely try it again though for it`s great shimmery, non pooling, rich colors!

Pair Three Success!  Onto March... and Pair Four!

Love You - January Ankle Socks with Heart

2. February 2015 07:04 by Jobo | 2 Comments

I have lots and lots of sock yarn leftovers... it comes with the territory.  I rarely make socks that use an entire skein.  So I thought between the January and February KnitFromStashKAL socks I might try and use up a few little scraps that are cluttering up my studio space!DSC_0681

The Yarn:

- Knit Picks leftovers... if I can remember correctly - Stroll Tonal in "Wine Tasting" and Stroll Tweed in Flagstone Heather

lovey toes!

The Pattern:

- who needs patterns!  (yeah right!  We all do sometimes...)  I decided to fly by the soles of my feet on this one and make it up as I went!

- I began with a Turkish Cast On... aka Toe up.

- Next came a color switch, since I knew that I likely wouldn't have enough to make the entire foot in the grey shade, I thought I might go for some Valentine themed socks and throw in some purple and pink shades!  Gotta love the contrasting heels, toes and  ribbing.  Classic.

- What goes with February and Valentine's Day?  Hearts.  <3 <3 <3

- I improvised a lace heart on each of the toes.  Just one on each foot.  Simplicity Rules.

- Then I knit until I was almost out of the Pink/Purple yarn on each foot, and did a short cuff with K2P2 Ribbing, and cast loosely with a stretchy bind off.

- The heels were afterthought ones... (see my tutorial here!)

cuffs and heels...

Notes:

- Another easy and simple pair of socks... maybe not the best design to keep feet warm in this wintery season (we just finished up with a snow and freezing rain storm over the weekend and there is another big white mess coming this evening!) but they're cute, they cleaned up a little of the yarn mess in my studio, and I think they will be perfect for lounging around the house.  Plus - they match my housecoat!  Win win win!
