Mystery Socks… Cheery Littlebottom

2. April 2012 04:43 by Jobo | 0 Comments

I’ve been participating off and on in a couple of sock knitting groups on Ravelry for a few years, but recently have dusted off my competitive spirit and I’m trying to jump back in with both feet :)

For the Month of April… I’m planning a double dip for prizes by doing the SolidSocks Mystery sock, which also counts towards the Sock Knitter’s Anonymous April knit because the pattern is named after a literary character (a perequisite for that group’s April Sock)

The pattern is:  Cheery Littlebottom by Allison Isaac

The name Cheery Littlebottom comes from the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchet… which I haven’t read yet, but have been thinking about trying.  So – this may be the inspiration I needed to kick things into high gear!

Clue number one is up… and it looks like there will be cables in them :)  toes up, and cables!  My plan is to use the skein of “Cocoa Kiss” Dream in Color Starry that has been waiting patiently in the stash.  I wound the skein into a ball this morning while Romy napped, and hopefully will cast on tonight or tomorrow.  With these mystery Knit alongs there is a clue released each week, so I hope that I can keep up and do the required portion each week and finish when the rest of the KAL group does.  It’s kind of weird choosing yarn while not knowing what the socks will be like, but I hope I chose ok :)

The socks can be cast on any time after April 1… and must be completed before the last day of April :)  Wish me Luck!

Pretty Yarns…

8. December 2011 15:47 by Jobo | 0 Comments

I gave in to a weak moment last week and ordered some pretty new sock yarns.  I wasn’t going to do that again before the baby arrives, just in case I don’t have time to knit much over the next little bit.  These were just too pretty to resist though:

Dream in Color Starry

This is Dream in Color Starry (Sorry for the link absence… their site is under construction)… which has little sparkly strands of silver incorporated right into the yarn… resulting in a shimmery sparkly yarn.  I’m not sure just how sparkly it looks knit up, but I’ve liked the way other people’s projects looked.  Lately I have a thing for neutrals and browns.  I might end up doing a pair of Cookie A. Socks with this or maybe some Hunter Hammersen Socks… hmmm so many great choices!

String Threory Caper Sock

And This is String Theory’s Caper Sock… a bouncy, deeply jewel colored, Cashmere Merino Blend.  I tried to capture the gentle sheen and depth of shade… and this is the closest I can get.  This is really really garnet colored yarn.  It’s soft, squishy, and I love it to pieces.  This will need to become a shawl for me.  Not for anybody else… but to be wrapped around my shoulders and neck.  Now I just need to decide… which Romi Hill Pattern will it be :)

Dream in Color Yarns!

It’s funny how the popularity of certain products just seems to explode from time to time… one of those products for me is Dream in Color Yarns.

The first thing that struck me is the range of colors!  (as one might infer by looking at the company name perhaps?)  Each skein is dyed using a special method producing a yarn that isn’t supposed to flash or pool, and really, the person who comes up with these colorways must be a very bright and colorful person herself – because these yarns are as beautiful as they are practical!

All of the featured yarns are made up of Australian Merino wool… which has be “Superwash” treated, and is super soft.  Various weights are available – from Chunky and Worsted, to Sock Yarns and Laceweight.  With names like “Smooshy” “Groovy” and “Classy” and colors like you see below, these yarns are hard to resist!

I have seen many many projects (from socks to hats and sweaters and baby items) made from this yarn, and loved so many of them, that I think it’s time I got my hands on some and check it out for myself!  “Smooshy” in particular, the sock yarn, holds some special interest – since it doesn’t pool really I think it would make some really excellent super-patterned and elegant socks… and the subtle color variation and shifting will keep it interesting at the same time.  (I am not often attracted to solid colored yarns… I like a little attitude and imagination in my colors)  And I hear that the yarn really is as soft and bouncy as it is reputed to be.  Oh great, another yarn that I bring home and then smoosh every time I walk by it for a few months until I obsess find the most amazing pattern to cast on.  *wipes drool of chin* (in the words of Liz Lemon… I-want-to-go-to-there)

Being a Sock Knitter, I am particularly intrigued by one of their newest sock products – Dream in Color “Starry” which has 2% real silver blended in with the same base as their Smooshy Line.  The Silver adds a sprinkling of sparkle and gleam that I never imagined to be found in homemade socks… but look at it in the skein below!  It really is *starry*

And Oh My… it is available in all of the usual colorways.  sigh.  I really want to try this beautiful yarn… does that make me a space cadet of a knitter?  I want to get Starry!
