Yarn Candy Monday: Pleasant Polwarth

1. March 2010 12:18 by Jobo | 1 Comments

blue threeply From this:

- London-Wul Polwarth Top

- Blues and Greys

- 4 oz

to this:

- super soft, bouncy

- 3-ply fingering weight yarn

- approximately 380 yards

I very much enjoyed spinning up this fiber... even though there were a few felted bits in places.  I chose to tear this fiber up into pieces since the colors were not distributed in any even pattern.  I used my handy-dandy postal scale to weigh the torn up chunks and try and make 3 singles of similar length.  In the end I decided to make 2 plies completely baby blue, and the third ply out of the darker shades of blue and grey.  I tried to randomly disperse the colors in the darker 3rd ply.  In the end, my weighing technique was pretty close.  There was a little bit more of the dark single than the others, which I navajo 3-plied just to use it up (around 15 yards)  You can see it in the centre of the skein, about 4 strands of yarn that appear to be all one color.

This skein is destined to become a pair of squishy wonderful socks for ME!  I am thinking maybe something with cables in it?  since the yarn is very basic in color...

Happy Yarn Monday!

Yarn Candy Monday: New Knit Pics Sock Yarn

23. November 2009 09:00 by Jobo | 0 Comments

A non-descript, boring brown package arrived at my door the other day? To the non-knitter, I'm sure it appeared as any other? But I knew it contained this:  My Knit Picks Order!  (yay for large piles of beautiful Yarn!)

knitpicks blue yarn

This particular beauty is Stroll Hand Painted Sock Yarn in colorway "Lullaby"  which contains 75% Merino Wool and 25% Nylon for durability.  Each Skein has lots of yardage at 462 yards per 100g - and a steal of a deal at 9.99 per hank.  I *might* have purchased a few *Ahem* ok several of the available colorways.  I wound this into a ball on Saturday to feed the need for long-car-drive-knitting.  So far so good, it is really nice to work with!

I am going to try and post pretty yarn pics once a week for a while? doesn't everyone need a little Monday Yarn pick me up?

Bubblegum Hero... Delicious Blue Sock Yarn

4. August 2009 14:45 by Jobo | 2 Comments

I finally got around to taking some pictures of my latest yarn...

My dyeing technique was rather haphazard that day, but as usual, the finished yarn has a mind of it's own :)  I must have been channelling the local dairy bar because it looks almost exactly like bubblegum ice cream!

After spinning the top randomly (torn into pieces and just randomly strung together) I decided to navajo ply to conserve the gentle stripes.  The finished yarn is 14-16 WPI (actually really even!  I impressed myself a little)  I was really surprised at the way the pinks and blues melded together too - Barberpoles, purple shades, all over gentle mixing.  The resulting colour is predominantly a robin-eggy blue with a mix of purples, lavenders, almost fuschia in some segments.  Because of the random colour placement, there are some stripes that are meters long, and others that are just short snippits.  I tried to be choosy with where my chain "joins" were so as to minimize any abrupt colour changes in the yarn.  From the 4 ounce braid I ended up with about 400 yards... so enough to make a decent sized pair of socks.  In a lot of ways this is the closest I've gotten to making something that is as thin and even as commercial sock yarn.
