Finished Della Socks!

What a Fun Knit!  (I even talked my mom into trying a pair of these puppies... hers look great too!)

I like the contrast between the leg and foot patterns, and for some reason I am really pleased with the garter stitch "Anklets" too!  All in all, this pair has been a pleasure to knit, and has had enough uniqueness and unusual additions to keep the whole thing fresh and interesting - from Zigzagging Cuff to Kitchenered Toes.

Della Socks finished 6 The Yarn is what really steals the show though... This Yarn was the special skein I won over on Violently Domestic from the lovely Hunter Hammersen!

In case you didn't read the previous post... Hunter is one of my Sock Rock-Star Idols... go check out her patterns!  They are fantastic!  and plus she has a new book coming out in December.  I preordered mine last week!

Back to the Yarn... it is Sirius 100% Merino Sock Yarn in "Sky Pirate" from Barking Dog Yarns

The Blues, Teals and Purples were a challenge to capture accurately on camera, but I think the top photo shows it most clearly (notice my helper?  he made sure someone had sniffed and walked allllll over the socks the prerequisite number of times before the photos were taken)

The yarn itself has a nice feel in the skein, and an equally pleasing feel in the finished socks.  It is plied tightly enough to make a smooth tight fabric, but still retains it's bounce and stretch too.

The dye job created just enough pooling interest for my liking.  I have cast on for this pattern several times before with different yarns, but I wasn't sure how I'd like the pooling and flashing around the chevron portion of the leg.... so I had decided to err on the side of caution and try something else for those yarns.  I'm really glad I just jumped in with both feet (hardy-har... Feet!)on choosing this yarn and pattern to go together, because I really like the end result.

I have another pink skein of yarn from this company... a Cashmere blend too!  I can't wait to find the perfect pattern for it and get started on that someday.

Della Socks... a satisfying adventure!

27. August 2010 07:21 by Jobo | 0 Comments

della socks closeup After the last pair of plain black ribbed socks I felt like I needed some Pizazz!  Some Adventure!  Some colour at least! lol

This pattern (Della Socks by Holly Terrell) has really hit the spot as far as interest and simplicity goes!

  • -The leg of the sock is in a zig-zaggy pattern
  • -There is a neat little band of garter stitch like a little ankle-bracelet
  • -The Heel is in a basic slipped stitch, cushy stitch
  • -The foot some fun Cable-like Ropes running from ankle to toes

Since the initial cast on, I feel quite pleased and entertained by this sock!  I love that the pattern has changes and twists and turns along the way.  By the way things have been progressing, it looks like sock number one could be completed today... and as you can see it fits me perfectly!  The design progresses from the chevrons to the garter to the ropes with ease, and makes a great looking transition!  I also love the coloring of the yarn... just enough flashing to be interesting, without being overkill.

Yarn Candy Monday is Baaaack! Barking Dog Yarns

9. August 2010 12:29 by Jobo | 2 Comments

barking dog card I was lucky enough to win a pattern and yarn draw a few weeks ago from Hunter Hammersen over at Violently Domestic... which included a fantastic free skein of 100% Merino Squishable goodness from Barking Dog Yarns.

Well my Package arrived last week, and I am finally getting around to showing you the photographs :)

When I found out I had won a skein, I thought that this would be a perfect time to order another skein too (as a test, you know, erm, to see what the rest of her stuff was like!  as if I need a reason to buy more yarn at this point)  So I also ordered a skein of her Cashmere / Merino Blend.  I love the colors!  It was really hard to decide!

Below:  Sirius 100% Fine Merino Superwash in "Sky Pirate"

The first thing I noticed when I picked up the envelope/baggie the yarns came in was how light and soft the yarn was.  In true Jobo Fashion, I could not wait the 30 second drive from the mailbox to the house to tear into the package.  I knew what it was, and I wanted it open NOW.  This yarn did not disappoint!  The pinks and purples are so soft and girly - the cashmere is so soft and lovely.  No doubt about it, this skein MUST become a shawl or scarf of some kind.  It needs to be close to the skin.  The vibrant blues and purples of "Sky Pirate" are difficult to photograph and even lovelier in person.  They remind me of the Caribbean ocean with it's teal and blue waters, with some indigo and violet shadows.  I will have to make the most special pair of socks yet to do it justice!

Suzan's customer service is fast fast fast, and completely top notch!  You will love her yarns... Pop over and take a Peek :)
